Tamil Nadu has long been a frontrunner in India’s tourism sector, and recent efforts are further propelling the state towards sustainable and convenient travel experiences. According to the India Tourism Statistics report of 2023, Tamil Nadu ranks second in terms of domestic tourist visits in 2022. Keen on enhancing the tourist experience, the authorities have introduced a novel facility at the Botanical Garden in Ooty, nestled in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu.
The Nilgiris district administration has been proactive in implementing innovative initiatives to attract tourists to the state, and the Ooty Botanical Garden stands out as a prime destination. Spanning across 55 hectares, the garden showcases a diverse array of plant and tree species, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. In a bid to enhance accessibility, especially for elderly visitors, the government has introduced electric cars within the garden premises.
As reported by Local18, these electric cars are capable of covering up to 40 kilometers in plains and 35 kilometers in hilly areas after a six-hour charge. Conveniently stationed near the garden’s entrance, visitors can avail themselves of this eco-friendly mode of transportation by paying an additional Rs 30 along with the park’s entry fee. With a seating capacity of 7 to 8 individuals, the electric vehicle is designed to facilitate a smoother exploration of the expansive garden, particularly catering to those who may find it challenging to cover the entire area on foot.
While this marks the first introduction of electric cars within the Botanical Garden, the concept of using electric vehicles for tourism purposes is not entirely new in the region. Many resorts and hotels have embraced this eco-friendly trend to enhance the guest experience.
Situated just 2.6 km from the Ooty Bus Stand, the Botanical Garden is easily accessible via Commercial Road. Established in 1897 by the Marquis of Tweedale, this historic garden boasts attractions such as a 20-million-year-old fossilized tree, adding a touch of antiquity to its allure. As the Ooty Botanical Garden embraces eco-friendly initiatives, visitors can now explore its natural wonders in an environmentally conscious and convenient manner.
